Project Overview

UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) has embarked on an important piece of research, with the ambitious task of looking at UK society's future needs and aspirations for water supply over the next 70 years. On the threshold of a new century we are faced with a number of new and emerging challenges. These include carbon emissions from water treatment and distribution, climate change and its impact on rainfall patterns and water scarcity and the environmental impact of water abstractions, including long-term depletion of ground water. Demographic change, population growth and affluence could lead to growing demand for water. Resource prices and power costs as well as innovation and technological advances could all also have potentially profound effects on shaping the operation of the water industry in the future.
